There was a lot of animosity there between JavaFX and Flex advocates, the most prominent JavaFX advocate being certainly James Gosling himself. And it was funny because the only answer Sun seemed to have against Flex was like “everything you can do with Flex, you can do it with Java, and even more”. But of course the problem is not what is possible, but what is easy to achieve.

Adobe AIR, currently in beta stage, is a new software from Adobe that lets developers using HTML, Ajax, Flash and Flex build and deploy rich internet application on their own desktop. Although AIR finalization is in progress, there are many applications out there built on top of it, showing all the cool capabilities of the software. I will list some of the ones available for the public.

Using some existing non-blocking socket code from the Internet I was able to quickly craft together a basic socket connection to Flex 3. This of course would work just as well with Flash with just a couple minor changes.

…code it your bloody self. But first, weigh the consequences. I’m referring specifically to when you have a design that you are trying desperately to shoe-horn into the Flex components. Key phrase here being “shoe-horn”, meaning it doesn’t fit quite right.
